On this day 101 years ago, July 28th, 1914, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Kingdom of Serbia! On that day began one the largest armed conflicts in the history of the human civilization – World War 1 or as it was called back then, The Great War.

95 REMEMBERING THE GREAT WAR

Small Serbia, with open and untreated wounds from two Balkan wars, did everything it was in its power to prevent the conflict with its powerful neighbor. Almost all demands from the degrading Austro-Hungarian ultimatum were accepted, except the one which directly cut into the independence of our country. However, if absolutely all the demands had been accepted, the outcome would have been the same!

Black and yellow Monarchy wanted by all means to punish its disobedient neighbor. “Serbia must die!” was heard all over Vienna.

However, the brave Serbian soldier showed that this plan will not be achieved that easily!  He heroically opposed the invasion of his homeland and famously defeated the arrogant aggressor! This modern knight defended not only the freedom of our country, but before all our Fatherland’s honor, showing that even when you are attacked by beasts, you still have to remain human!

Militant circles in Vienna thought this would be a “quick Balkan campaign”, but it actually started the terrible mechanism which shortly brought war and terror to the entire world.

Maybe the best way to pay tribute and show respect to our heroically fallen ancestors is with lyrics of Vojislav Ilic Junior, which he dedicated to them:

“Blessed are the offsprings, which mourn for them,

Because they were the pride of their nation!

Blessed are them as well, because they have fallen gloriously,

For their Fatherland, King and Freedom!”

Let eternal glory shines upon all the victims of the Great War! Let their suffering never be forgotten!
